Career History

Randal was born to affluent parents in the great city of San Fransisco. His father, a Captain by the time he was born and an Admiral by the time he entered the Academy, made it clear that there was only one path for young Randal: that of an accomplished Starfleet officer. His mother fully supported her husband, and together they urged their young son to success. Their family had a long history of successful Starfleet officers dating all the way back to when Starfleet was first formed, and as an only child, Randal's future was decided even before he was born. He completed schooling previous to Starfleet Academy in the most top tier schools available, and entered the Academy at age 18 already on the Command track. His resume was neatly padded with everything a future Captain should be involved in; volunteer history, leadership experience, a carefully constructed list of extra curricular activities, and of course, excellent grades.

As he had been groomed from birth for Captainhood, he diligently worked his way through the Starfleet Academy program and emerged at age 22 with a Command degree. While in the Academy he had garnered somewhat of a reputation as someone who could deal quickly and efficiently with anyone or anything he deemed problematic or troublesome. As an Ensign aboard the U.S.S. Lamden he often overstepped his authority bounds in dealing with situations such as these, but having the advantage of the attention of Starfleet Command (due both to his Academy performance, and the influence of his father), he quickly moved up through the ranks to a position where such authority would be well used. He left the Lamden at age 27 and the rank of Lieutenant, being reassigned by Starfleet to the U.S.S. Helana.

There he continued his rise through the ranks until he was finally summoned back to Starfleet Command at age 32 for evaluation and then promotion to Captain. Starfleet then began sending him on brief assignments to assume the position of Captain aboard ships that they deemed "problematic". He continued this series of assignments until he was sent to the U.S.S. Legacy in 2273. While this too was intended to be a brief assignment, ultimately he ended up being more permanently assigned as the Legacy's Captain, and Starfleet has given him no indication that they intend to reassign him again. It is his opinion that they have decided that he has devolved into one of the troublemakers that he was originally sent to dissuade, and therefore have no further use for him.

Personal History

While Randal had a very active high school career, due to the strict regiment of his parents' schedule he did not often experience his own personal socialization. The Academy was a similar story, though by that point he had begun to use his appearance and his charm to his advantage in many ways. He developed no close, personal relationships during his first few years at the Academy, and it was not until his senior year that, to his great chagrin, he found himself growing dangerously attached to a young woman who he had been frequently associating with. What happened in this relationship is unknown, as he flat-out refuses to tell me. I suspect he was in love. In any case, whatever it was ended at graduation.

Randal's personal relationships remained absent for many more years. However, when he was 27, one of the women he often spent time with while on Earth contacted him to inform him that she was pregnant with his child, and that she was keeping it. He argued against it extensively, but eventually gave up and agreed to send support money to the mother on a monthly basis. When the child reached four years of age, he decided he wanted to meet it, and through extensive work and legal battles, eventually was able to meet his son, Conner. Since that brief meeting, Conner's mother refused to give him any more visitation rights, though he still pays extensive child support.

After that meeting, Randal threw himself even more deeply into his work, aiming and finally achieving his goal as Captain. His time on the Legacy has proven to be a strange one for a variety of reasons, one of these reasons being that he has developed long term personal relationships with some of his subordinates. At first, he was eager to finish the Legacy assignment and be on to the next. However, if asked presently, it is very likely he would choose to stay on as the Legacy's Captain.

Physical Appearance

As per any Starfleet officer, Webb is fit and well toned, taking great pride in his appearance. He keeps his black hair neatly slicked back, and his slate colored eyes are accentuated with heavy, dark brows. He keeps, in his own words, a carefully trimmed "manly stubble" which is sometimes fully shaved for more formal occasions. His large hands are heavily calloused from a strict workout routine, and he weighs in at 180 lbs and measures at 6'1''. A secret lament of his is that the bright and obnoxious uniform of Command Yellow does nothing for his complexion, but he has never shared this peeve with anyone.

Personality

As a child and a young man, Webb was entirely single-minded in his pursuit of success. Whether this was due to his parents' influence, his own personal motivation, or a combination of both remains unseen. Whatever the reasons, by the time he reached the Academy his dedications to perfection and achievement were totally ingrained. Within this, he developed a nasty habit of using relationships with others only as a means towards eventual manipulation. Through practice he grew quite skilled in using others to get what he wanted. Despite this his general overall appearance was that of a charming and polite young man, a countenance that he still carries today. He enjoys a good battle of wits, and unless crossed will be generally friendly. Women are often on the receiving end of light flirtation that he very rarely means. However, this countenance, while very well maintained, is merely a mask that has been carefully constructed.

Due to his single-minded tenacity regarding his goals, Webb garnered the side effect of virtually no casual social skills. He is an excellent superior officer and exceptional when it comes to professional social situations, but when it comes to casual social situations he devolves into a miry pit of social awkwardness. For this reason he tends to reject any personal relationships and strictly keep to his professional ones. Furthermore, he regards any sharing of personal information or emotion as intense weakness, a weakness that will certainly be exploited by whoever has obtained it. Whether this reaction is from personal experience or merely from caution is not known. However, since being aboard the Legacy his carefully maintained mask has begun to weaken.

Although he certainly never learned it in a Command class, Webb has a habit of using his skill of manipulation to essentially tease people. A previous superior officer once referred to him as a "snarky bastard", which he decided to take as a compliment. He is almost impossible to ruffle, and keeps an excessively calm countenance at all times. The times he has raised his voice at anyone can be counted on one hand (assuming the hand is a Terran one), and even when incredibly angry, he almost never shows it. His current emotion at any given time can only be described as "vaguely amused". During the infrequent times when he attempts any type of personal socialization, especially if the individual he is engaging with is someone who's company he enjoys, he tends to slip into an almost goofy mood, joking and teasing with no apparent hint of ulterior motive. These occasions are drastically infrequent, but they have begun to crop up more and more often.

His quarters look almost un-lived in, everything is standard and clean. The only personal item in his entire living area is a single, leather-bound journal on a shelf. The contents of said journal are unknown. As a young man he secretly began stress-smoking, an illegal activity that he eventually broke himself of. However, sometimes when over stressed he will succumb to a cigarette or two in private.

At one point in his life Webb eventually envisioned himself at a comfortable desk job somewhere in Starfleet Command once he reached an appropriate age. This ambition is now completely gone, a result of his temporary crippling due to an encounter with the Tholians. During the time he was crippled, he was irreversibly headed for a desk job and such a fate being thrust upon him completely disintegrated any desire for it in the future. He now intends to stay on active duty until he is physically unable to hobble onto the Bridge anymore.

This applies to me as well.

I can't help but snicker at the idea of Webb being "goofy". :XD:
